| | Since 1948, Memorial Day auto racing has been a tradition at the Silver Dollar Fair. This year, as we have had for several years, there will be a 200 lap Enduro race. The total purse this year is $3,500 with the winner taking home $1,000.
Dirt track racing came to the United States before World War I and became widespread during the 1920s and 30s. It is the single most common form of auto racing in the US. There are hundreds of local and regional racetracks throughout the nation; some estimates range as high as 1,500. The sport is popular in Australia and Canada also.
Nearly all tracks are oval and less than one mile in length. The Silver Dollar Fair racetrack is 1/4 mile long. Racecars achieve higher speeds and have increased intervals between the cars on longer tracks. This decreases the chance of crashes, but increases the damage and chance of injury when cars do crash.
The track surface may be composed of any soil, but most racers prefer a track with a clay base. The track operators try to keep the surface tacky and may sprinkle water on it if it begins to dry. Most are highly banked as is the Silver Dollar Fair racetrack.
